Wilsons Promontory Expedition, November 2002

In November 2002, Australian Marine Ecology chartered the MV Kalinda for a ten day expedition around the coast of Wilsons Promontory, Victoria. The purpose of this expedition was to survey the shallow reefs for the Parks Victoria long-term monitoring program, as well as to investigate the biota of the deep reefs, which have not been systematically surveyed before. Wilsons Promontory has an exceptionally high diversity of sponges, corals and other animal colonies on its deep reefs (25 to 50 m deep). Australian Marine Ecology has commenced documenting and mapping these special communities. While we were there, we were fortunate to encounter a pod of humpback whales playing under the lighthouse. Below, you will find some short pieces of video footage from this excursion.

Please revisit this page in the next month for spectacular ROV (remote operated vehicle) footage!
